The girl I left behind

A poem about Youth and leaving behind a part of ourselves.

___

I glance at the girl I left behind,

I marvel at the things she helped me find.

I mock her naivety.

I cherish her gaiety.

I bear the weight of her choices,

Her flaws and her vices.

The friends she thought would stay forever,

The things she said she would do never.

Her dreams, her hopes, the path she took,

Her poetry, her music, her favourite book.

All I left behind,

Including her heart kind.

She looked at the world with hope and love,

I shed a tear for her heart,

looking at the skies above.

How did I lose her? When did it start?

I am the product of her design,

I am hers and she is mine.

She was just a young girl,

wanting to love and be loved by all

Isn’t that what I want too, after all?

  1. How do you DO this?

Seriously mad props to you because I can’t imagine writing something new every day and having it turn out good.

Do you have any tips on how to overcome writers block or have you not experienced it much? 🙂

    1. Hey, to be very honest, I wrote this while I was half asleep already, but I couldn’t resist writing on such a good word. I face writer’s block too but with stories primarily. Poems come to me in the moment. I didn’t stop for one second while writing this.. Just write what comes naturally 🙂

      1. Yes I understood that..

Sometimes it is not in control to preserve the original

While the other times it’s just the inability

Sometimes it’s all the same, just the perspective changes.

May be you are still the same on the inside with lot more of wisdom and changes on the outside…

  2. I really enjoyed reading the poem. Although, I am yet to connect with someone (love wise) but I think from here, I could pick an idea concerning the complexities of relationship where our hopes rises so high only to crash down than we realise.

    1. I’m glad you dropped a comment. Actually, I wrote this about leaving our past selves behind. The naivety of youth and all the other things that come along with it. Interestingly, the perspective you mentioned, about leaving a loved one behind was recently pointed out by a friend too.

  3. I see. I also admire your perspective. You know that sometimes poets always have to deal with their works being interpreted beyond what they have in mind. Do you often have that urge to want to insist that people accept the meanings you give to your poems and not add to it ?
